The Effects of Congruent Multisensory Feedback on Perceptual Sensitivity of Hand Remapping in Virtual Reality

Hyunyoung Jang, Jinwook Kim, Jeongmi Lee, 2021-2022

Avatar embodiment is a topic of research that has been studied steadily with the emergence of virtual reality, and it has reached a consensus that multisensory integration of sensory modalities induces a better body ownership illusion. Interestingly, there are a number of research papers suggesting that illusory ownership produces disownership of the real body. Thus, here comes a question: what would happen to our perceptual sensitivity in virtual environments when congruent multisensory feedback is provided to our avatar that increases the sense of embodiment? This work attempts to explore the effect of multisensory processing on perceptual sensitivity by measuring thresholds of hand reaching movements with gain factor applied.
