Target Uncertainty in Games

Hyunchul Kim, Jeongmi Lee, 2021-2022

Game designers strive to keep players motivated to experience everything they have planned. Reward uncertainty has long been recognized as a significant motivator in the game designer communities. In contrast to reward uncertainty, target uncertainty, referring to how predictable the pattern in which targets are presented, has been rarely investigated. The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of target uncertainty on player motivation. Players’ behavioral and physiological data, such as electrodermal activity, heart signals, and eye-tracking, are collected to assess player motivation.
